Gray wins on hot Kerr Lake

ATHENS, Ala. – Baking under triple-digit temperatures, Brandon Gray won the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, Virginia Division 19 tournament, held July 24, 2010, out of North Bend Park on Kerr Lake.

The 36-year-old angler from Bullock, N.C., landed five bass weighing 15.12 pounds to collect the win. Gray caught a total of seven keepers. Anglers could keep two bass between 12 and 14 inches, but the rest of the bag had to measure more than 14 inches long.

“I lost two bass bigger than 4 pounds,” Gray admitted. “It was slow fishing. The lake is a little clearer than normal in places so I used natural shad-colored crankbaits all day long. I dedicate this win to my brother, Doug Gray. We lost him four years ago today. He was a heck of a fisherman and taught me a lot. I still think about him every day.”

Chris Bullock, 47, of Fountain, N.C. landed in second with a five-bass tournament limit going 12.87 pounds that included a 3.15-pound kicker. He pulled six keepers from the 50,000-acre Roanoke River impoundment on the Virginia-North Carolina border.

“I ran stumps 13 to 15 feet deep with a crankbait,” Bullock said. “I looked for stumps near bait.”

In third for the boaters, Wes Cashwell, 46, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., finished with 10.88 pounds. He actually caught 15 keepers with the top five bass weighing 11.38 pounds, but suffered a penalty. In the extreme heat, he went deep.

“I’ve been fishing this lake for 20 years,” Cashwell explained. “I caught all of my fish on swimbaits around main lake shoals and points in 20 to 25 feet of water.”

Cory Leonard of Castalia, N.C., landed four bass for 10.51 pounds with one 5.84-pounder to take fourth place. Doug Parker of Angier, N.C., landed five bass at 10.92 pounds, good enough for third, but a penalty dropped him back to 10.42 pounds and fifth place. Scott Kerslake of Henderson, N.C., landed the tournament lunker, a 6.31-pounder.

For the Co-Angler Division, Anthony Rife, 35, of Woodlawn, Va., landed three bass going 7.46 pounds. Catching a total of four bass, he fished green pumpkin plastics on a Carolina rig in 18 to 24 feet of water.

Robbie Anderson of Midlothian, Va., took second among the co-anglers with a three-bass division limit weighing 6.71 pounds, followed by Bill Burton of South Boston, Va., with three bass for 6.44 pounds, including a 2.12-pounder.

Jonathan Ward of Johnson City, Tenn., just missed second place. He landed two bass weighing 6.88 pounds, but settled for fourth when a penalty knocked him back to an official tally of 6.38 pounds. He anchored his bag with a 3.02-pounder.

Durwood Daniels of Kittrell, N.C. caught two bass for 5.83 pounds with one 2.99-pounder to take fifth place. James Midkiff, Jr. of Halifax, Va., landed in sixth place with two bass at 5.67 pounds, but took division big bass honors with a 4.44-pounder.
