Tilson prevails despite changing conditions
ATHENS, Ala. – An inopportune cold front sweeping down Georgia threw a wrench into Rick Tilson's plans, but he found enough fish to win the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series operated by American Bass Anglers Georgia Division 8 tournament, held March 13, 2010, on Lake Lanier.
Royal Purple Pro Rick Tilson, 42, boated a five-fish limit weighing 14.68 pounds to secure victory in the 56-boat Pro Division. The Smyrna angler also landed a bass weighing 5.19 pounds on this gusty day. In all, Tilson pulled 10 bass from the 38,000-acre lake near Cumming.
"What I found in practice changed overnight," Tilson said. "I had been catching fish shallow on spinnerbaits, but that went away after the cold front came through. I was a little nervous when the water temperature dropped and the spinnerbait bite went away. We had to scrap everything and start over. We started throwing jerkbaits around main lake points that dropped off into the pocket side. I was sitting in deep water, but the fish were up shallow and the 10-pound test fluorocarbon allowed the bait to suspend very well."
Chad Boggs, 35, from nearby Cummings also caught a tournament limit, landing in second with 14.08 pounds. His biggest bass weighed 3.37 pounds. He fished a deep-diving crankbait, but threw it up into three feet of water.
"These fish were full of shad, so I was going for a reaction bite," Boggs explained. "I fished it very slowly."
Michael Washburn of Covington also fished a jerkbait, taking third among boaters with four bass weighing 12.61 pounds. He also took big bass honors with a 6.78-pounder that hit a chartreuse Fat Free Shad.
James Coberly of Jefferson finished fourth with five bass weighing 12.49 pounds. Rounding out the top five boaters, Matthew Hunter of Buford caught four bass for 12.11 pounds.
In the Co-Angler Division, Mark Compton of Dacula landed three bass at 8.89 pounds with a 4.43-pound kicker for division lunker honors. He and his boater found a pocket with fish busting on the surface. To tempt his bass, he slow-rolled a Mini-Me spinnerbait and crawled a Fish Head along the bottom.
Jeff Maddox, Jr. of Palmetto landed three bass for 8.76 pounds, including a 4.23-pounder to take second in the division. Brad Rutherford of Lavonia caught three for 7.99 pounds, followed by Steve Hill of Jasper with three bass weighing 7.90 pounds. Dale Lowenstein of Roswell took fifth with two bass at 7.24 pounds.
