King needs tie-breaker to win Dardanelle squeaker

ATHENS, Ala. – It came down to a tie-breaker, but Zack King of Clarksville emerged victorious among boaters in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series operated by American Bass Anglers Arkansas Division 12 tournament, held March 6, 2010, on Lake Dardanelle.

King and Chris Roark of Drasco each pulled 12.78 pounds from the 34,000-acre Arkansas River impoundment near Russellville. However, King caught five bass to Roark’s four. Roark lost a tournament winning fish, giving him second place and a check for $1,251 instead of the victory and a $2,502 check.

King, 31, caught his first two fish on a Rogue. Then, he moved to another spot, landing three more on a 1/4-ounce XCalibur XR25 lipless crankbait. He fished the Russellville Bay area.

"I fished the lower end of the lake, which is more clear," King said. "This lake doesn’t really get clear. Clear is when you can see your bait in a foot of water. Most of the fish I caught were in about two feet of water."

Roark, 46, found all of his fish in one spot. After fishing Delaware Bay, he moved to Dardanelle Bay. Later, he returned to Delaware Bay and caught all four fish in about 10 minutes around 1 p.m.
"It was just a matter of timing," Roark explained. "I had practiced two days and caught one fish. Today, I found a wind-blown point and a pocket where the fish were active."

Tim Gartman of Conway placed third out of 54 boaters with 8.74 pounds, followed closely by James Snell, Jr. of Van Buren with 8.73 pounds. One of Snell’s fish weighed 6.60 pounds, big bass for the tournament. Jerry Williams of Conway took fifth with 8.70 pounds.

In the Co-Angler Division, Randy "Jared" Allen of Atkins won with three bass weighing 8.82 pounds, pocketing $1,251. He caught all of his fish in the first hour by jerking a Rogue.

Randy Staggs, also of Atkins, landed two bass for 6.90 pounds and second place. Co-angler point leader Desiree Tschirschwitz of Arkadelphia caught only one fish, but her 5.26-pounder took third and division lunker honors, plus another 198 points. Tim Crow of Malvern finished fourth with 4.59 pounds followed by Reid Prescott of Bryant with one 4.55-pounder.
