Alabama anglers trap bass at Guntersville
ATHENS, Ala. – Lipless crankbaits and jigs provided the action on Lake Guntersville with Chuck Hemm of Huntsville winning the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series operated by American Bass Anglers Alabama Division 1 tournament, held March 6, 2010.
Hemm led the Boater Division with five bass weighing 26.86 pounds, pocketing $5,000 for the effort. He pulled one 6.43-pounder from the 67,900-acre Tennessee River impoundment.
“I had been practicing for three days and found some fish on a jig and a Rat-L-Trap,” Hemm said. “I just kept cranking and grinding for three days and found three spots with fish. During the tournament, I culled one fish at 10 a.m., from my trap spot. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., I caught all my fish on jigs.”
Justin Hamner of Birmingham took second with five bass weighing 25.33 pounds with one tipping the scales at 9.35 pounds. He also caught his fish on lipless crankbaits and earned $2,832.
“I chunked a lipless crankbait until my arm fell out,” Hamner said. “I only had six bites from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. One was short and I weighed in the others.”
Christopher McReynolds of Louisville, Tenn., ran all the way back to his home state to find five bass weighing 23.59 pounds. One weighed 8.51 pounds. He caught his fish on a 1/2-ounce Rat-L-Trap around grass in six feet of water.
Jerry Lemley of New Hope finished fourth among Boaters with five bass weighing 22.31 pounds. Cody Bow of Winfield took fifth place with five bass for 20.95 pounds.
Daniel Jackson of Ashland City, Tenn., topped the Co-Angler Division with three bass weighing 16.27 pounds, collecting $2,500. One bass weighed 5.55 pounds.
“I caught my fish on a black and blue jig,” Jackson explained. “The fish wouldn’t take it hopping or crawling. I just had to drag it along the bottom and bounce it off the rocks.”
Dale Norred of McCalla took second in his division with three bass weighing 14.95 pounds, one a 7.63-pounder. He caught his fish on a 1/4-ounce Rattling Spot and a Bomber Flat A crankbait.
Eric Johnson of Cullman caught three bass for 14.46 pounds and third place. He caught his fish on jigs in 10 to 15 feet of water.
“I was fishing jigs in 10 to 15 feet of water, which is normally the opposite of how we catch them during this time of year,” he said.
Brian Helderman of Albertville placed fourth in the division with three bass weighing 14.15 pounds. Paul Stidham rounded out the top five non-boaters with three bass totaling 13.85 pounds.
