Alabama North Head To Guntersville Lake This Weekend
By Troy Jens
The Groundhog saw his shadow, and the legend proves true this year as winter drags on in the mid-South. But a short warming trend is forecast beginning a couple days before the Alabama North Division of the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament on Guntersville Lake, and the anglers will be met with milder conditions on the legendary impoundment.
“The biggest thing I’ve noticed is that due to the flooding and cold water the grass is washed out on many places out in the main lake, eliminating many of the areas that the fish normally hold this time of year”, says Bassmaster Weekend Series angler, Ed Gettys. Gettys has been one of the top money winners in many tournaments on Guntersville Lake over the years, and his expertise has earned him recognition as one of the top local anglers of all time the area.
Gettys believes that there are a lot of fish ready to make the move up, and they will do so quickly if the weather finally brings the water temps back toward normal. Whether that happens by the weekend is yet to be seen. “I think more will be caught shallow than deep”, said Gettys, and he says that he wouldn’t be surprised to see a winning weight of over 30 pounds in the upcoming tournament.
It took over 27 pounds to win Last week’s East Tennessee Division of the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series on Guntersville. Guntersville is one of the few lakes in the country where it commonly takes weights of over 25 pounds to win all season long, not just in the spring months or pre-spawn periods.
While the winning weight may be massive, Gettys notes that there have been many lower weights and even many zeros in the tournaments over the past few tournaments, indicating that the numbers are not up to the normal standard. While those anglers who are “on them” do very well, many anglers are still struggling to get the big limit weights this season.
Bassmaster Weekend Series angler and former WBT (Woman’s Bass Trail) angler, Betty Stahl will be competing in the Alabama North event, and she is keeping mostly shallow water tactics in her game plan. “I know they are predicting nicer weather toward the weekend, but usually the fish bite better here when the weather is nasty”, says Stahl. Stahl has been a local lady angler for many years on Guntersville Lake.
Since the folding of the WBT, several lady anglers have decided to enter the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series events. “Hey, if you already have a boat, you may as well use it”, she explained. Stahl cited the tough economy and other support issues as reasons for the demise of the WBT, but says she is excited to compete locally in the Bassmaster Weekend Series.
Both Gettys and Stahl believe that the standard rattle-bait patterns will probably prevail, but neither angler would rule out a jig or even a deep water pattern if some of the bigger fish move up to stage in open water areas.
