West Holds On to The Lead at BWS Nationals
Russellville, AR......Darrell West of Drasco, AR, the day one leader, continues to lead with 13.56 pounds to add to his 1st day weight of 14.65 for a total of 28.21 pounds at the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series National Championship. “Oh my gosh… I’m one step closer to my goal of making it to the Classic”, said West. “I feel really great today, but I’m not quite as confident going into tomorrow. I’ve already caught so many out of the same area I just don’t know if I can get more than three or four more keepers. I‘m just going to keep doing what I’ve been doing using the same plan as yesterday.” West average weight has been just under three pounds for each fish,” he concluded.
Leading after day one on the co-angler side is Merrill Showers of New Columbia, PA with 12.65 pounds. “It’s awesome. Stinkin’ great!” said Showers with a slight air of excitement. “I drove 1,266 miles to get here and it’s been totally worth it. This is my first trip to Dardanelle and as soon as we got here on Saturday and slept a while, we were up on the water first thing Sunday morning. I started watching the weather a few weeks ago and when I saw so much rain, I got my sights set on fishing in muddy water. So, with that in mind I brought all my tackle for muddy water, and then it’s turned off beautiful. However, the water is still muddy so I’ve been bringing along 6 or 7 rods every day. I just said I hope the good Lord throws a 5 gallon bucket of luck all over me! I’ve had great boaters both days. Today I had Pete Saraf, who is known to his co-anglers as ‘the Guide”. After I had a good bag of fish, I asked him if he wanted me to stop fishing and he said, no, just keep on finding bigger ones! My goal is to WIN!!! I want to take the $50,000 and buy a new Toyota Tundra”, he concluded. Showers is married to his wife, Sherry and has a son, Coton, 13 years and twin 4 year old daughters, Lizzie and Dazzie.
The Tournament continues through Saturday with weigh-ins each day at 3pm. The public is invited out to watch and see who the lucky angler will be that wins the $100,000 plus the chance to go to the Bassmaster Classic in Birmingham in February.
