By Lisa Talmadge
Hendersonville, TN...October 10, 2009...Mark Mauldin of Knoxville, TN is one step closer to the Bassmaster Classic with his first place victory at the Southern Regional Championship earning a Triton 18 Xplorer powered by a Mercury Optimax at the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series bass tournament held on Old Hickory Lake. Mauldin`s two day combined weight was 27.75 pounds.
Mauldin who lives in Tennessee but only fishes Old Hickory once every couple of years managed two days of practice and said fishing was tough. Late on his second day of practice, the winner found that a small spinnerbait fished fast around super shallow cover was the best way to get numbers of fish to bite. Concentrating solely north of the 109 bridge, Mauldin was able to catch nine keepers on day one working the spinnerbait/shallow cover pattern. Day two was a little slower with only seven keeper bites. Each day he managed one bass over five pounds that was key to his victory. The winner remarked that he caught a lot of fish but had to weed through the short ones and keep grinding all day to end up on top. He fished his spinnerbait on a Joe Burns custom rod.

Overall Boater big bass award went to David Epema of Jefferson City, MO for catching a 6.79 pound largemouth.
The co-anglers brought 337 fish to the scales with a total weight of 636.37 pounds. Jason Holloway of Auburn, KY earned first place on the co-angler side with a total weight of 14.50 pounds. Holloway focused on quality not quantity pitching and flipping a jig behind his pro partners.
