Hurst Wins on Wheeler

By Lisa Talmadge

Decatur, AL . . . May 9, 2009 . . . Tim Hurst of Oxford, AL is one step closer to the Bassmaster Classic with his first place victory in the Alabama North division earning $5,000 in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series bass tournament held on Lake Wheeler.  Hurst`s five bass limit weighed in at 21.46 pounds.  He started the day by swimming a BO’s swim jig through shallow grass, but did most of his damage during the heavy showers that seemed to turn the fish on.  When the storm subsided and the sun came out, the winner turned his attention to shallow bushes.  He managed to cull a few times in the afternoon flippin` a 3 1/8 oz BO’s flippin` jig.  Overall, Hurst said he caught approximately 15 keepers during the day.  Not too bad for a 1/2 day of practice.

Boaters brought in a total of 397 fish weighing 896.98 pounds.  Boaters in the top five were: second – Phillip Dukes of Rainsville, AL with 21.09; third – Curt Staley of Huntsville, AL with 19.22; fourth – Jimmy Mason of Rogersville, AL with 17.38; and fifth – Gary Thacker of Athens, AL with 17.17.  Boater big bass award went to Phillip Dukes for catching a 9.07 pound largemouth.

The co-anglers brought 225 fish to scales with a total weight of 473.36 pounds.  Leon Brewington of Moulton, AL took first on the co-angler side with a total weight of 13.09 pounds.  Remaining top five co-anglers were: second – Chad Wynn of Athens, AL with 9.59; tied for third – Duanne McQueen of Gadsden, AL and Marshall Brooks with 9.49; and fifth – Randy walker of Kennesaw, GA with 9.39.   Co-angler big bass award went to Timothy Curran for catching a 4.81 pound largemouth.

The next event for Division 01 – Alabama North will be held 27 June 2009 on Neely Henry and launching from the Gadsden City Boat Dock.
