Remington Skips to Victory on Harris Chain

By Mike Whatley

Leesburg, FL. – May 9, 2009   Ryan Remington, a resident of Orlando, FL used his ability to skip a Trick Worm under docks on Lake Griffin, one of seven lakes that make up the Harris Chain of Lakes in Central Florida, to take the top spot in this weekend`s fourth and final single day qualifying event of the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series operated by American Bass Anglers. His First Place victory earned him the guaranteed $5,000 purse plus 200 points toward his qualifying for the Year-end Championship worth over $200,000 and a slot in the prestigious Bassmaster Classic”.

The ongoing drought, that has plagued the region for several years, has still not showed any signs of letting up. This condition has caused the water levels on the chain of lakes to steadily drop and has virtually cut off sections of the system to boaters, with some passages being too shallow to navigate through. Ryan was able to put together a strong dock pattern, targeting those docks that still had from 1 to 3 feet of water under them and skipping his June Bug Trick Worm as far back under the docks as he could. The bass were holding in the shade provided by the docks as they looked for the cooler, darker haunts provided by blue bird skies which are the result of a high pressure system that has parked over the state. Ryan`s five fish limit weighed in at 15.73 pounds and was capped off by the Boater Big Bass, which tipped the scales at 6.30 pounds and earned Ryan an additional $235. Remington is also eligible for an additional $500 in contingency monies through the Triton Gold program, which will bring his total earnings for the weekend to $5,735.

The remaining top five boaters were: Second Place, Rick West, of Astatula FL (4 fish, 14.87 pounds, $1126); Third Place, Pete Saraf, of Orlando, FL (4 fish, 14.53 pounds, $751); Fourth Place, Cliff Prince, of Palatka, FL (5 fish, 12.16 pounds, $526) and Fifth Place, Barry Pavia, of Fruitland Park, FL (5 fish, 11.97 pounds, $451).

On the Co-Angler side of things, Jason Miranda, also from Orlando, used the same trick worm and color to put together a three fish limit that weighed in at 6.88 pounds. Jason was able to catch his fish from the ever present grass beds that are found throughout the lake system. The presentation had to be very slow, with water temps now creeping into the mid 80`s, the Florida Strain Bass` metabolism is slowing down and presentations have to be matched to the fish`s mood. Jason’s back of the boat victory earned him a healthy $1102 and another 200 points toward the end of year results.

The remaining top five co-anglers were: Second Place, Rickie Remington, of Belleview, FL (3 fish, 6.74 pounds, $551); Third Place, Adam O`Steen, of Sanford, FL (3 fish, 6.48 pounds, $367); Fourth Place, Ken Willits, of Mount Dora, FL (3 fish, 5.19 pounds, $257) and Fifth Place, Eddie Roberts, of lake Helen, FL (2 fish, 5.18 pounds, $220)

The next event for these Florida, Division 6 anglers will be their two day Division Championship, which will be held on the St. Johns River and launching from the Palatka City Docks, in Palatka, FL on Sept 19-20. The top 40 Boaters and Co-Anglers from this event will advance on to the Regional Championship, a no entry fee tournament, which will be conducted on the Columbus Pool in Mississippi, Oct 16-17 (Fri/Sat). The Regional tournament will be a 2000 point event for the winner in each category and will ultimately help to decide the Royal Purple Angler of the Year for both the Boaters and Co-Anglers nationwide.
