By Gary Conner
Warren, Oh. - July 19, 2008. Johnstown, Ohio angler Ryan Stumpf found the secret to Mosquito Lake today, bringing in a five fish limit of largemouth bass that weighed 13.03 pounds. Ryan found his fish on Thursday while practicing, saying that the numerous weed beds on the lake just looked too good to pass up. The key was finding the right weed beds, and working them slow and easy with surface frogs. Color did not matter, so long as you were on the right kind of weed bed.

Gadsden, AL – June 28, 2008. Josh Fordham of Glencoe, AL took the boater victory in the fourth tournament of the Alabama North division on Neely Henry. Fordham’s five bass limit weighed 14.04 pounds.
Fordham took a simple approach to catch the winning mixed bag and claim $5000 for first and an extra $1500 from Mercury and MotorGuide. He focused on fishing instead of burning gas. Utilizing an 1/8 ounce Picasso shaky head with a Zoom trick worm, Josh fished main channel brush in 10-12 feet of water just south of the ramp. The winner culled through four limits of fish to end up with his winning weight. The key Fordham said was to catch a couple fish in each spot and let it rest. He had three prime areas that produced consistently throughout the day.

Nesterenko Flips To Victory
By Porter Trimble
The weather was calm and sunny, temperatures not too hot, and the water had a little stain to it making it a good day to catch fish on Lake Millwood for the 4th and final qualifying tournament for Arkansas Division 12 anglers or so it would seem. With a 16 inch minimum and 3 fish limit on Black Bass it was a little tough to find those spotted bass to complete a 5 fish limit for the boaters. Tony Nesterenko was one of only two anglers to bring in a 5 fish limit and was able to squeak past Bryan Calloway with a winning weight of 13.93 pounds. Tony caught his fish flipping a Beaver and an Ugly Otter in shallow water. For his win, he claimed the first place prize of $5,000 and will add contingency money from Triton Gold, Mercury and MotorGuide to increase his total winnings to $7,000.

By Mike Whatley
Hartwell, GA; June 14, 2008 – Williamston, SC native, Christopher Powell claimed the top prize at Lake Hartwell this weekend with a 5 fish limit of Largemouth and Spotted Bass that tipped the scales at 15.44 pounds. In a tournament where only 8 five fish limits were brought in, Powell surpassed his closest competition by nearly 2.25 pounds. His victory earned him the guaranteed $5,000 purse plus.
A local favorite on Lake Hartwell, Christopher fished three events of the Bassmaster Weekend Series in 2007, finishing second on Lake Hartwell, but was only able to make this event this year. Powell put together his winning stringer by fishing a Sammie on top earlier in the day and switched to a Fluke as the sun got high. He reportedly had fish working on his lures all day, as was attested by his second place co-angler partner, two time BASS Jr World Champion, Matt Henry, who said he lost a fish over five pounds about 30 minutes before check-in. Lake Hartwell is famous for its top water bite that tends to last all day in the gin clear waters of this Savanah/Tugaloo River impoundment. Often bites come from 60 plus feet of water.

He then concentrated his efforts flipping willow bushes with a Lunker Lure Triple Rattleback Jig. Lexington, NC – June 7, 2008. Eric Moser, of Salisbury, NC beat the 97 degree heat as well as the other 55 boaters in the third event of the Division Five North Carolina Bassmaster Weekend Series operated by American Bass Anglers by bringing in a 5 fish limit totaling 15.35 lbs. His first place victory earned him the guaranteed $5,000 purse plus 200 points toward his qualifying for the Year-end Championship worth over $200,000 and a slot in the prestigious “2009 Bassmaster Classic”.
Launching into a balmy seventy two degrees at 5:45 in the morning, anglers sat patiently waiting for their boat number to be called, most of them well aware of what laid in store as the day progressed. It was almost as if summer had been here for a month, even though it has not officially started. Every angler would be tested as the temperature steadily climbed. Moser had his game plan set as his turn to leave was called, having practiced on Wednesday and Thursday prior to the tournament. He opted to stay home on Friday, not wanting to hurt his chances on Saturday. His practice days had developed a strong crankbait pattern, with his fish holding on channel breaks in 10 – 12 feet of water. Eric used a Lohrs Lure modified crankbait to catch most of his fish, hooking a total of six keepers throughout the day and having boated his limit by 10:30. Eric started off the morning with his first fish ending up being his kicker fish - a 5 pound bass.

Chambers burned a lot of fuel trying to find a hot spot to catch fish. He caught a few keepers in the morning but struggled to find quality fish while moving from one spot to another. Lake Wales, FL – 31 May 2008 – Jeremy Prouty, of Vero Beach, FL put together a 5 fish limit weighing in at 18.79 pounds, topped off by a 7.79 pound largemouth to claim big bass honors for the boater side of competition. His weight surpassed the nearest angler by almost three pounds. Jeremy thought he had put together a solid morning bite, having caught several good fish during practice, but was not able to make his fish bite on Saturday morning. As the day wore on and many anglers went to find deeper and cooler waters, Jeremy was in less than two feet of water. The fish he found in practice had gone shallower in the cleaner water and were chasing bluegill. His weapon of choice being a Spro lipless crankbait thrown on fluorocarbon line. He said he was site fishing most of the day because you could literally see the fish in the shallows chasing bait before he made a cast. His first place victory earned him the guaranteed $5,000 purse plus 200 points toward his qualifying for the Year-end Championship worth over $200,000 and a slot in the prestigious “2009 Bassmaster Classic”.

After the short weather delay, Patterson got to his spot and the fish were gone. Making a few minor adjustments, he backed off into 7-9 feet of water and relocated his fish from practice. Using a Spot Remover shakyhead trailed with a Zoom finesse worm, he culled through three limits of bass ending up with the winning weight.

Mike Hicks takes Virginia Division Lead Claims Triton Black Gold at Kerr Lake
By Gary Conner
South Hill Virginia – April 19, 2008. Everyone knew it would be a tricky bite for the tournament. Water levels had reached almost 305 feet, five feet above normal pool and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was doing everything they could do to pull the water down in preparation for storms in the forecast. All week long they had dropped the lake about six inches a day, and tournament day was no exception. Throughout the week the bite started out aggressive and tapered off the closer we got to the event. Anglers who found spinnerbait and crank bait bites during the week found that bite had all but disappeared. Almost to a man the anglers said the only thing that was still working was a very slow plastic bait bite.
Mike Hicks of Goochland, Virginia said he was concerned that his patterns would not produce when he only had two fish by eleven in the morning. “I thought to myself that in the past I would get impatient and start to fish faster and faster, so I forced myself to slow down and concentrate even harder. I had two days of practice where I had had moderate success on plastics and stayed with that pattern. Pitching plastic baits close to cover it was not long until I hooked up with my largest fish of the day at 6.40 pounds. That put me at three fish with a decent total weight. That is when my co-angler, David Powroznik, put his rod down and told me to concentrate on getting the win. I only got six bites all day, while in practice I had about twenty per day.”

La Plata, MD. - March 30, 2008. For the second season in a row, the Bassmaster Weekend Series had to cancel the first event on the Potomac River due to small craft advisories. Winds were brisk when registration began and flags were flown starting at about 3 PM Friday and remained up until 6 pm Saturday evening. Considering safety for all the anglers the tournament had to be cancelled for Saturday. Fortunately, Sunday was available for a makeup, so the event only had to be delayed for 24 hours. The associated front caused the fish to get off the bite somewhat, with anglers claiming they did not munch like they had been doing all week long. But as we all know, someone always seems to figure the fish out.

Clarks Hill Lake, March 15, 2008 – The threat of looming severe weather didn`t hinder Keith Williamson from plying his wares on Clarks Hill Lake this weekend. While the launch was as picture perfect as one could possibly expect for a day on the water, by the time weigh-in started, an approaching frontal system had already started to make itself known with winds blowing at 20 mph and gusting up to 35 at times. Keith, from Lincolnton, GA had just the ticket for these North Georgia pre frontal, pre spawn bass. Williamson`s Peanut Butter and Jelly Jig, fished in 10 foot of water around wood and the inside edges of grass was the just what the doctor ordered for the 17.97 lb., 5 fish bag of bass he brought to the scales. Enough so that Keith and his Co-Angler Jason Wiley decided to call it quits 30 minutes early to get ahead of the imposing weather. His 1st Place victory earned him the guaranteed $5,000 purse plus 200 points toward his qualifying for the Year-end Championship worth over $200,000 and a slot in the prestigious “Bassmaster Classic”.

Even though it was cold and miserable he was able to catch around 30 pounds with his 5 biggest fish during practice and his only concern was that the tournament would be canceled. Mother Nature decided to concede this one and move on, not dumping as much snow or ice as was predicted and allowing the tournament to go on as planned.

1200 Miles of New Lakeshore - Now What?
by Bob Wood
Bob Perkins worked hard all year long fishing the ABA Bassmaster Weekend Series, Minnesota division. Out of the gate he took home the top prize at Lehomme Dieu. A 13th place finish on the Whitefish Chain didn’t sway him. Collected, he brought his ‘A’ game to Pokegama to claim is second win in three tournaments. The Bassmaster Weekend Series held its second 2008 tournament on Sam Rayburn February 9 at the Umphrey Family Pavilion. In the days leading up to this event, the wind howled nearly every day, making for high rollers and rough water.
