We are excited to welcome the anglers of the Southern Region for the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series Regional Championship coming Oct. 5-10”, said Kaye Ireland, Executive Director of the Sumner County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We have played host to many tournament trails from across the US and always look forward to having them in our city. We have so much to share here in our corner of the world that it is a pleasure to welcome them back over and over again”, she continued.

The top 40 boaters and co-anglers from the Southern region of American Bass Anglers, will be in Hendersonville, Tennessee for the 2009 Bassmaster Weekend Series Southern Regional Championship, October 5th-10th, 2009. This region consists of Alabama North, Tennessee East, Kentucky, Missouri, Wisconsin/Minnesota Divisions. Host for this years’ Southern regional is the Sumner County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Old Hickory Lake, 22,500 acres of water, is an important asset to the county, Ireland says, both for the residents and the tourists. "We sponsor a lot of fishing tournaments—the Wal-mart FLW, Everstart, Bassmaster Megabucks, BASS Tennessee Eastern Invitational, Super Bass Classic National Championship and Bass Pro Shops Crappiemasters National Championship among others”, she said. “In 2007, the county hosted the American Bass Anglers Couples Championship. The tournaments are mostly national championships that garner substantial publicity. Larger tournaments can have as much as a $3.2 million economic impact during the week they take place”, she said.

The three black bass species (largemouth, smallmouth and spotted) provide the most popular fishery in Old Hickory Lake accounting for 45 percent of angling effort. Five fish in any species combination may be harvested per person per day. There is a 14 inch minimum size limit for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Fish for bass in close proximity to submerged cover and fish attractor sites.

While the main tourist attraction in the county is Old Hickory Lake, Ireland points to the nine historic homes available for tours as another reason Sumner is becoming a "destination" for visitors. "These homes predate the Civil War. They've been restored and are open to the public to enjoy," Ireland says. "Many special events are held at these sites, including the Holiday Heritage Tour of Homes in December."

Anglers and co-anglers official practice days will begin at safelight Monday, October 5th and conclude Thursday, October 8th at 3:00pm. Tournament days begin at safelight Friday, October 9th and Saturday, October 10th, 2009, with weigh-in at 3:00pm both days. Location for blast-off and weigh-in will be at Saunders Ferry Park. The residents of Sumner County and the surrounding areas are invited to come out and watch the excitement as anglers anxiously await their final placement and the opportunity to advance to the National Championship.

“I hope that anglers keep coming to our area for many years to come…. We’re going to do our part to make sure they do!”, continued Ireland.

Sponsors of the Bassmaster Weekend Series include: Triton Boats, Toyota Tundra Trucks, Mercury Motors, Royal Purple Synthetic Motor Oil, Early Times Kentucky Whisky, Hi-Seas Fishing Line, ProBass Networks, and Rejuvenade.
